About the Menil Collection

The Menil Collection is an art museum located in Houston, Texas. This 30-acre neighborhood of art gives you the main building with special exhibitions and a permanent collection as well as a campus with four other museum buildings. As you might have discovered, you can spend hours upon hours soaking up the gorgeous pieces of art!

The great thing about The Menil Collection? Admission is always free! Closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, you can visit The Menil Collection Wednesday – Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. You’ll find the museum located at 1533 Sul Ross Street, Houston, TX 77006.

Various Exhibitions

You’ll discover numerous exhibitions to look at when you visit The Menil Collection. Some of the exhibits you can view include:

  • Selections from the Permanent Collection – In the Permanent Collection, you’ll find a growing collection of art that spans from the prehistoric era to the present day. Some of the art featured includes Byzantine art, 20th and 21st American and European art, West and Central African art, and more. You’ll find works from North Africa, the Middle East, Asia, and the Mediterranean as well.
  • Roni Horn: When I Breathe, I Draw, Part II – With this exhibit, you’ll enjoy viewing the work of Roni Horn. This exhibit brings together a series of drawings that exemplify the technique of cutting as a way of drawing. Truly artistic in every way, you won’t want to skip this exhibit!
  • Contemporary Focus: Mineko Grimer – If you’re looking for an interesting exhibit, this is the room for you. One of the art pieces, Remembering Plato, is a room-sized installation with pyramid-shaped blocks of ice embedded with small pebbles that are suspended in the area. The ripples in the water create a gorgeous effect.
  • Collection Close-Up: The Graphic Work of Dorothea Tanning – Here, you’ll find gorgeous artwork from Dorothea Tanning. Offering pieces with reoccurring motifs, this collection is truly an existential experience.
  • Works by Cy Twombly – This art emerged from New York art in the early 1950s by Cy Twombly. In the early 1990s, The Menil Collection and Cy Twombly worked together to display numerous paintings.
