Check out some cool facts about Neil deGrasse Tyson so you’ll be ready for the show. These facts prove just how popular and important he is.
He Changed the Sky in Titanic
Director James Cameron takes accuracy seriously. He worked hard to make his blockbuster film “Titanic” as accurate as possible, but he dropped the ball when it came to the night sky. Neil deGrasse Tyson dropped the director a note to let him know the stars were not properly aligned when Rose evacuated the ship. He didn’t hear back from the director, so he brought it up in person. Cameron wasn’t initially receptive but ended up changing the night sky to make it accurate. Now, when you see that night sky, you know that it’s just as the sky would have looked when the Titanic crashed.
He’s Part Superhero
Science and comics don’t usually collide, but they did in Action Comics 14. Tyson appeared in the comic and helped Superman see his home planet from afar. He made sure his storyline was rooted in scientific fact. He picked an actual red star that Superman could see and put that star inside of Krypton’s orbit.
He Helped Demote Pluto
When you were in school, Pluto was probably still a planet. You might even remember a project or two where you created Pluto as part of the solar system. Pluto is no longer a planet, and that’s largely due to Tyson’s insistence. He refused to refer to Pluto as a planet prior to the demotion. He states that he is not solely responsible for the demotion but does admit to driving the getaway car. In other words, Pluto might still be a planet if he hadn’t been so vocal about demoting it. Maybe he will talk about the demotion at his show in Houston.
