Dog Shaking

The Houston World Series of Dog Shows is coming to the NRG Center on July 18–22. This isn’t some stuffy dog show, either. It’s full of fun and excitement for all ages. You can just come to watch the dogs or bring your own. Along with watching dogs compete, you can do a little shopping and learn quite a bit during the event. Admission is free on Wednesday, $10 on Thursday, and $15 on Friday through Sunday. Seniors, active duty military, and retired military get a discount. Children 12 and under get in for free, as long as they’re accompanied by an adult.

Let’s look at a few of the top events.

Conformation

Many people will go to see the conformation event. This is what you likely think of when you think of dog shows. Each dog is judged on his appearance. This is all about conforming to breed standards. If a dog has something outside of the norm, he will lose some points. This goes beyond a simple beauty contest, though. There is a reason the AKC wants dogs to confirm. When dogs meet the breed standard, they tend to have puppies that do, as well. It’s all about passing the breed standards down from one generation to the next.

AKC’s My Dog Can Do That!

You might not have a show dog, but your dog can come to the show. If you bring him to the AKC’s My Dog Can Do That! The event, he will get to try his hand (or paws) at an agility or rally course. A trainer will guide Fido along, and you get to watch the entire time. Then, you’ll have some tips and tricks you can use for training him at home.

Meet the Breeds Seminars

Getting a new dog is a big decision. How do you know which one is right for you? You can get some valuable information by attending one of the Meet the Breeds seminars. You’ll learn all about the different breeds, including the advantages and disadvantages of each one. By the time you leave, you’ll have a much better idea of which breed will fit into your lifestyle.
